The UAB Huntsville Center for Psychiatric Medicine at the UAB Health Center Huntsville is fully committed to the mission of providing a broad and comprehensive range of clinical services to those needing mental health treatments. Our highly trained physicians are experienced in providing the expertise and compassion that you need. Mental illness can come from biological as well as environmental factors and our treatment plans are designed with this in mind. We offer comprehensive evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric illness for adults and geriatric patients (both inpatient and outpatient) through programs that apply the most advanced diagnostic and therapeutic techniques available. Some of the programs offered include:

Geriatric Psychiatry Program offers a specialized program in the area of geriatric psychiatry. This program focuses on the needs of aging and elderly patients. Some common disorders treated in this program include, but are not limited to, dementia, depression, anxiety, and late-life schizophrenia. Older adults have special physical, emotional, and social needs. Understanding this, the geriatric psychiatrist takes a comprehensive approach to diagnosis and treatment, including listening and responding to the concerns of the older adult, helping families, and when necessary working with other healthcare professionals to develop effective approaches to treatment. Co-existing medical illnesses, medications, family issues, social concerns, and environmental issues are integrated into a comprehensive program of care.

Sports Psychology Program offers a relatively new and very specialized program for athletes. Our Sports Psychology Program is specifically directed toward the issues and challenges that face athletes of all ages. Sports psychology applies the science and practice of psychology to the world of sports. Sport psychologists are focused on cognitive and behavioral approaches to improving competitive performance and the care of an athletes’ mental and emotional life.
